Over two years since it’s launch and MOBI zone has grown to more than a million domain names - the activity in the area of the sites for mobile devices and cellular phones is high. The domain tld administrator dotMobi says the zone will continue to grow.

The volume of mobile content is rapidly increasing, just look how big is the ringtones and mobile apps market. Owners of existing sites are gradually overcoming the traditional anxiety about going mobile.

In June 2008, according to a poll carried out by dotMobi and AKQA, 90% of the respondents would search for information and services in the mobile internet. However, referring to the strong interest of companies and brands, the dotMobi adds a bit too much hype to all this. The peak of 500,000 domain names had been conquered in May 2007, only 8 months after the start of taking domain registrations in the zone. Afterwards the interest in mobile domain names began to decline. Judge for yourself: the registration of next 500,000 domain names took about one and a half years.

Given that there are more than 2 billion mobile phone users worldwide, these statistics do not seem very impressive. Basically, you don’t need a mobi domain name to run a wap application for your clients. Many companies use a subdomain like wap.example.com to redirect the cell phone surfers.
