Last Regulations Published for Columbian Domain
filed in Domain Politics, Domain Registration on Jul.25, 2008
Yesterday, the last version of the regulations for .CO domains was published on the web site of the Ministry of Communications of Colombia.
On this last version of regulations for domains .CO it is confirmed that accents, Ñ should be allowed and also it has opened the possibility of IDNs of other idioms (including umlauts) which will have to be defined by the new management of .CO domains.
It is also established that those entities that already have registered their domain name under the 3rd level before the approval of the regulations should have priority to register the same domain under the 2nd level (you can read more about 2nd level Columbian domain here ).
There are two elements that call for attention:
1. They will probably choose to have the domain name Conflict resolution UDRP since it is considered to be more practical, leaving on a side the local resolution system, although it had been published on the first regulations that they would eventually have a Resolution Dispute Center.
2. The registrars accredited for domains .CO will be defined by the new management of the ccTLD and the Ministry of Communications, but in the future there would be options for new companies that fulfil the requirements to be accredited registrars of .CO domain names.
The complete text of the new regulations can be found at: http://www.mincomunicaciones.gov.co/mincom/src/user_docs/Noticias/RESAPROBPOLITICAV2.pdf

Does this mean I can get a .co domain?

It means that you PROBABLY will be able to get a .co domain. For starters you will have to dish out $230 for your desired .com.co domain name. Afterwards you will be eligible to register .co. I personally, don’t think someone should spend fortune on .com.co - it can go both ways, depends on fashion and it is not guaranteed that .co will come alive (although it seems it will). You risk your money but if your intuition says it is OK, go for it

So why would I want to fork 230 that domain? What are the benefits?

I agree - that’s a lot of money. You could be interested in .co domain if you fancy to do some dirty parking. I think many will try to register for example PopularCompany.CO, stuff it with senseless ads and hope that people who mistype the PopularCompany.COM domain name would be clicking their stupid ads like mad. Depends on what your business concept is…
Personally, I will not register .CO names. I am not interested in it. If you are, you may consider doing it.
