Polish Domain Million Hoax
filed in Domain Registration on May.18, 2008
Recently www.dns.pl - the official administrative body of PL - the domain name of Poland - announced that the PL registry has reached the millionth domain name. That would be another good news about domain boom this spring unless it was a hoax - at least part of it.
In fact there are only 676,435 PL second level national domain names in Poland. The rest comes on account the third level domain names; and Poland is popular with its third level domains. No other country can boast with 153 second level domains. The ones that make sense are com.pl, net.pl and edu.pl but then there is a lot of very funny and interesting names also.
Let’s take se*.pl for an instance. Well, you surely understand what comes under the asterix
And this is official and legal and run by the administrative body NASK. More than 300 domain names are registered under the Poland’s spicy domain.
Then there is szkola.pl which is “school” in Polish language. You guessed right - school is less popular than the previous second level domain name in Poland!
And how about babia-gora.pl - it means “old hag’s hill” in Polish. But don’t worry - that’s only a town’s name. In fact there are second level domain names for over 100 Polish towns, the most popular being… warszava.pl because it is a capital? No! The most online city of Poland is wroclaw.pl with 3,563 third level registrations; then comes szczecin.pl with 3,532 names and Warszava trails with 2,195 domain names.
If the tendencies of growth will remain the same, we will be able to celebrate the real PL million on June 2009. Meanwhile, if you can prove your intentions are good, you can register your own PL domain name by going to NASK and accepting their TOS. The registration fee is around £47 for the Polish domain name.
